Richard Neave

Medical Artist
British expert in forensic facial reconstruction

“The Real Face Of Jesus” (not named)
With three well-preserved specimens from the time of Jesus in hand, Neave used computerized tomography to create X-ray "slices" of the skulls

For a BBC documentary, Son of God, working on the basis of an actual skull found in the region. He did not claim it was Jesus's face. It was simply meant to prompt people to consider Jesus as being a man of his time and place, since we are never told he looked distinctive.

The Veil of Veronica

The Veil of Veronica was a cloth said to have been held out to Jesus, and to have taken his image, as he was led to his crucifixion at Calvary. Despite being lost in the 1500s, it still informs our ideas of what Jesus actually looked like.

This painting was discovered sometime in 1921 and dates back to around 235 AD.

The image shows Jesus Christ healing a bed-ridden man, who then has the strength to carry his bed on his back and walk.

Quotes

The Christ Under Reconstruction

Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari draw on this historical fact when suggesting a philosophical consequence of the notion of the face The face of Christ, they argue, is the face with which we compare all other faces More-over, they hold, the Christ image – which has become the face of faces – em-bodies goodness, whiteness and maleness, inseparably; hence, it is the face of the White Man himself. In other words, to Deleuze and Guattari, the face of Christ is the very basis for the universalization of white maleness

The Pope (2006):
“Searching for the face of Christ must be the desire of all Christians"
